Food Security

FREE INFORMATIONAL WORKSHOP and TRAINING SESSIONS

FOOD FOR ALL- WHAT IS FOOD JUSTICE?
“Food for All,” was a free half-day workshop on Saturday, April 12, at the Los Ranchos Fire Station. The workshop was sponsored by Rio Grande Community Farm, and was underwritten by the General Board of Global Ministries of the United Methodist Church.
Guest speakers, Rev. Thomas Henderson from The American Community Garden Association, and Pamela Roy, director of “Farm to Table” in Santa Fe,
spoke to the issues of: “Who in our society has adequate food and who does not?” “How can we support the creation and expansion of community-based food projects, such as community gardens and agricultural enterprises at the local level?” and, “How are progressive cities viewing urban land-use in relationship to these issues?”.
Henderson and Roy addressed the current issue of food security—each individual’s right to nutritious food and the ability to be self-reliant in this regard. They focused on the necessary food and agriculture policy changes needed to make this basic right a reality. Local Albuquerque projects were on display, including a tour of the Community Garden and Community Farm at Los Poblanos Fields. Rio Grande Community Farm offered follow-up sessions for those wishing to participate in helping support food justice in our community.
In the 2002 season, with the help of volunteers, Rio Grande Community Farm was able to donate over 6000 pounds of fresh, locally grown organic produce to several local foodbanks.
