Alvarado Elementary's Garden Project
First grade students are spreading corn in a weekly feeding program
for the
cranes, and geese. Students from all grades are taking walks on
the field
observing birds,and the changing habitat.
March will bring a Saturday work day when parents, students, and
friends of
the garden, will clean up the garden and prepare for planting, and
upgrade the seating areas under the trees.
Late April or early May is planting time! This year we plan to
expand our
butterfly or perennial garden. Our shrubs have done so well it's
time to
give them some room, and add a few more. Last year over 250 students
planted various sized sunflowers, broom corn, and scarlet runner
beans. We also plan to plant knaf, for an experiment with paper
making.
The goal of the garden project is to provide habitat and food for
animals, and to provide a space for hands on experiences.
Thanks to Patrick Huggins, First grade teacher and Rio Grande Community
Farm board member, for this update on Alvarado Elementary School
garden located on the Los Poblanos Fields and supported by Rio Grande
Community Farm.
