Migrating Sandhill Cranes in the Remaining Winter Corn

Migrating Sandhill Cranes in Corn

Wildlife Day at RGCF on April 28th

Rio Grande Community Farm is home to coyotes, hawks, many species of song birds, and hundreds of migrating Sandhill Cranes and Canada Geese.  What a joy to see this kind of wildlife right in the middle of a city!  Enhancing urban wildlife habitat has always been part of the ambitious mission of Rio Grande Community Farm (RGCF).  RGCF is a non-profit, educational farm in the North Valley.

Since our inception in 1997, RGCF has contracted with the City of Albuquerque to farm 52.5 acres of Los Poblanos Open Space.  As part of our agreement with the Open Space Division, RGCF plants 25% of our acreage in wildlife crops, including corn, sunflowers and grains such as sorghum.  These crops are left in the fields for migrating birds and local wildlife.  They are not harvested or sold, and we do not receive any compensation for these crops.  In return, RGCF is allowed to use the remainder of our 52.5 acres for agricultural purposes and related activities, and is entitled to all of the proceeds from the production and sales of crops.

Besides the planting of wildlife crops, additional habitat improvement projects are not required by our agreement with the City. However, protecting and enhancing wildlife habitat is a priority of RGCF. With the support of our local community and the City of Albuquerque, RGCF could continue to improve this urban wildlife oasis beyond the planting of wildlife crops, but we need your help! We are looking for dedicated volunteers and funding to make future habitat enhancement projects happen.

You can support our Wildlife Program in many ways. Choose one of the options below and fill out the Wildlife Donation Form. Your donation will help us cover the cost of growing food for migrating birds and local wildlife. Or, donate online via Paypal.

Adopt an Acre — Each year, RGCF plants at least 12 acres in wildlife crops, such as grains, sunflowers, and corn. These crops are not harvested or sold. They are left in the fields for Sandhill Cranes, Canada Geese and others. Adopt one or more acres for $50 each. Adopt an Animal — Migrating birds and local animals enjoy the open spaces and wildlife habitat at Rio Grande Community Farm. Choose your favorite animal and we’ll continue to make food available for these critters.

Run, Walk or Ride for Wildlife — Challenge your family to run, walk or ride your bikes to or around Rio Grande Community Farm. For every mile (or minute) your family is on the move, donate a dollar (or more!) to RGCF.
