Migrating Sandhill Cranes in the Remaining Winter Corn

Migrating Sandhill Cranes in Corn

RGCF and Los Poblanos Open Space are home to a wide variety of wildlife and provide important feeding grounds for migratory birds. From November to February, large flocks of Sandhill cranes, Canada geese and snow geese visit the Farm daily to feast on the corn, sorghum  and other grains grown specifically for them.  Coyotes stalk the fields, even in the middle of the day, hoping for an unwary meal.  The fluid notes of meadowlarks echo from tree and fences as kestrels and larger raptors soar above.

Smaller animals await discovery.  Roadrunners and pheasant hide in weeds and hedgerows, emerging to investigate freshly-turned earth and new plantings.  Cottontails warily help themselves to fresh growth in the Community Garden. Lizards scuttle through brush piles. All manner of insects, spiders and soil organisms can be found by any avid naturalists who are curious enough to take a good look.
